EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP
Fred Smith was asked what his role in leadership is: I use this definition: “An executive is not a person who can do the work better than his people, he is a person who can get his people to do the work better than he can.” My responsibility is to be a supervisor, not a superworker. A little selective laziness is not all bad. It increases the thinking time. It is very important that the people who work for me understand my job. If they don’t know what my job is, they often try to do it. That’s why it’s so important for them to know what I want to retain control of. I decide this very simply. I make a list of all the things that only I can do. It’s an embarrassingly short list. I have to add a few things that I prefer doing to make the list long enough to justify my salary.
