OFFENDING THE LITTLE CHILDREN
One of the most arresting statements ever made by Jesus during his sojourn on earth was concerning the offending of children. He said it would be better for one to have a millstone tied around his neck and that he be cast into the sea. That is an extreme sentiment. One wonders just how many times a week a child hears and sees the offers made by dealers in tobacco and alcoholic beverages or how many little ears are forced to hear vulgar language at home, on the street or elsewhere? Again, one wonders how many youthful eyes feast upon the pictures and words in the hundreds of filthy magazines made available on and under the counters, at news stands or at stores.
