MUTUAL COMFORT
United Airlines Flight 232, attempting an emergency landing, cartwheeled and crashed just short of an airport landing strip in Sioux City, Iowa, on July 19, 1989. One hundred and twelve people were killed, and 184 survived. Passenger Jerry Schemmel, age 29, is involved with a support group organized to help survivors cope with the lingering emotional trauma. Wire services quoted Schemmel: “For me, talking to other survivors is probably the most valuable thing, as far as therapy… You can talk to counselors, your wife, your family, but when you sit down in front of another person who went through the same thing you did, you know that person relates exactly to what you’re talking about.”
