CUBAN CHRISTMAS
Orestes Lorenzo, at 36 years of age, gazed at the best Christmas gift he’s ever had: his wife and two sons. Twenty-four hours earlier, Vicky Lorenzo, age 35, and her two boys, Reyniel, age 11, and Alejandro, age 6, had been living in Cuba, not allowed to leave the island nation because Mr. Lorenzo, a highly decorated Cuban air force major, had defected to the United States in March 1991. Now the boys played with their Hot Wheels cars on the carpet and Vicky talked quietly with family and friends crammed into the tenth- floor suite at the Grand Bay Hotel in Coconut Grove.
