Nathaniel Hawthorne in the short story, “The Great Stone Face,” tells about people who grew up in a small mountain village which was overshadowed by a great stone face on a distant crag. The face seemed kind and the people felt that it was sending wisdom, love, and peace down to their village. A legend concerning the face was passed down from one generation to another. Someday the village would produce a man whose features were like that of the great stone face. As the years passed by, the people’s hope was occasionally raised that the legend had come true when a former village boy who had achieved fame and would return. But each time they were disappointed.
