INWARD OR OUTWARD
Leith Anderson tells of an experience which indicated whether the church’s vision was outward in serving others or inward in serving its own needs and comforts. Leith and his family were on vacation at another church – a large church – on a cold wintery Sunday morning. The parking attendant directed them to a parking space which was quite a distance from the church. As they slipped and slid their way to the church, they saw several empty spaces that were reserved for staff members, and were clearly marked as such. His conclusion was that this was a church with an inward vision. This was one indication that this particular church was more concerned with its own welfare than reaching out to others and showing them how important they are. In the early 1980’s his own church evaluated itself and found that it had many inward qualities. The church chose to change. A name change, a new location, a staff…
