LIKE DECORATED EGGS
While stationed in Europe with the US Army, I had opportunity to visit in the Soviet Union. A Russian friend took me to his hometown of Odessa, and while there, we visited a unique gift shop. The main articles for sale in the gift shop were decorated eggs. The insides of the eggs were removed with a syringe, then another syringe dried the interior with short puffs of air. The exterior was then coated with some type of varnish for rigidity and strength. The final step was hand painting and a myriad of decorations. While browsing through the selection, I exchanged a handful of rubles for a cobalt blue egg with pearl, silver, and gold design on it. It is a beautiful but very fragile piece of art which I proudly display in my office. At times, we can become much like that egg. We stand in church looking every bit like strong Christians, but on the inside, we are hollow…
