Knowing what is important and maintaining those values is an essential part of virtue. Before the Dieppe raid of World War II, an English civilian with the code name “Professor Wendell” received an unusual assignment. Because of his inventions in radio detection, the Royal Air force was always able to spot German planes before they reached their targets. With the invasion of the continent imminent, the Allies needed to learn what kind of installations the enemy had by the shores. Professor Wendell was assigned to investigate a radio detection finder near Dieppe, to see what kind of similar ability the enemy might have. When the regiment landed quietly, no enemy was in sight. With the Professor’s vast technical knowledge, he would only need a few minutes of examination. Most of the soldiers trained their guns in the direction of any potential enemy. But the professor had a bodyguard of four soldiers, whose only job was to keep their guns drawn on him.…
