AN OPPORTUNITY FOR HUMILITY
The Gospel of this Sunday touches a sensitive nerve in me. It speaks about the authority with which Jesus speaks, heals, and exorcises demons. People who saw Jesus said: “What is this? A new teaching, taught with authority!” When Jesus addressed the people, his words had healing power and even were able to make evil spirits obey. All of this stands in contrast to my own experience in preaching here. I wonder if anyone is really listening, and I often experience my words as totally powerless. This morning, while I was trying to say a few things with conviction, I found myself face to face with a man who was sound asleep. He was sitting in the corner of the first pew and kept reminding me, in his passive state, that my words had absolutely no authority for him.
