WEARY IN WELL-DOING
I recently had an unexpected day off. My daughter Jessie and I decided to make the most of it and planned a mother
daughter outing. We would go to a real restaurant for lunch (eating out to Jessie usually means fast food) then to a children’s matinee. We studied the menu and made our selections. As our waitress came, we both beamed with the excitement of our special day. Jessie, who is normally shy with strangers, gave an unusually big grin and said her most grown-up, “Good morning.” The waitress didn’t realize the importance of our day, or of the privileged gift Jessie was giving. She didn’t even look at us when she snapped, “Do you know what you want?” My face was red with anger as I gave her our order. I wanted to give her a piece of my mind as well, but I restrained myself.
