DUTCH GIRL’S SALVATION
Anne Weirsma, who like many Dutch people, ate tulips because there was no food, recalls how her pastor was arrested just before Christmas of 1944 because he prayed for the Jews and for the Dutch queen. He never came back. He died at Dachau at age thirty-eight. That Christmas Eve, her father read to the family from the gospel of Luke how Jesus as an act of love came to a dark world full of sin and sorrow. She thought of how the holy family was in an occupied country that was cold and lonely, and how they hated the occupiers, yet God decided to shed his light even in a situation like that. At that moment, the light of God entered her heart, and the light of God that entered her heart then has never left her.
