A REAL PROBLEM IN ARITHMETIC
In an arithmetic class, the teacher gave her students a problem to solve that involved fractions: “Suppose that, in a family of five children, the mother had but four eggs to divide among them. How could she do it evenly?” Silence reigned. Everybody calculated diligently. Most of the class were at a complete loss for an answer. The teacher put forth the question a second time. Finally the resourceful boy put up his hand. “Well, Johnny, what would you do?” asked the teacher. “Scramble ’em, Miss Brown,” was the reply. Can you imagine that boy getting into a tight place that he could not get out of? Not a bit of it! From Little Leads to Leadership by Frank H. Cheley
