SACRIFICIAL SUBSTITUTES
The Ryatt family is sitting at the dinner table and Mom announces to the kids, “Food is so expensive these days that your father and I have decided to cut out desserts to save money.” Winky, the youngest boy says, “DESSERTS! Can’t we cut out liver and broccoli instead?” We’re a lot like Winky. We don’t mind sacrifice as long as we don’t have to sacrifice what we like. But true Christian sacrifice, as during the Lenten season and the tradition of “giving something up” deals with giving something up that you would rather not. Like desserts, like giving an extra ten percent to the church. It would be like my son, Joshua, voluntarily and purposefully giving up pizza and Nintendo.
