He describes listening to a father tenderly tell the story of his fifteen-year-old boy sitting there beside him. In the last turbulent days of the war, the man’s wife had a brief affair with another man. She became pregnant. By the time the child was born, her remorse was so great that she attempted to kill the child. She nearly succeeded.
