USING CHILDREN AS SHIELDS
A two year old boy who lived in Chicago, Illinois was shot in the head and critically wounded when a man scooped him off a sidewalk, and used him as a bullet shield, authorities said. Jonathan Williams was walking Friday on a sidewalk on the city’s west side with his mother, Shirley Porter, and three brothers, police said. A car pulled up and a passenger began firing a handgun at Matthew Hall and two other men standing nearby, and Hall picked up Jonathan and used him as a shield, Sgt. Chris Zaglifa said. Zaglifa said Hall, 30, was grazed by a bullet and the two other men were also wounded, but none as seriously as the boy, who was listed today in critical condition. Hall was charged with aggravated battery to a child, a felony, said Andy Knott, a spokesman for Cook County State’s Attorney Jack O’Malley. Police were searching for the gunman.
