THE CHILD IN THE MANGER
Two young Hebrew men walking to the synagogue paused before a store to examine a reproduction of a painting called The Child in the Manger in the window. “Do you know what that”s all about, Yussel?” said one of them. “No. I don”t understand. Here is a family living in a stable, with animals, the floor covered with straw, and the poor little baby, stark naked . . . “So?,” said the first young man. “So,” said Yussel, “how could they afford to have their picture painted?” Adapted from The Joys of Yinglish, by Leo Rosten
