RELATIONSHIPS OVER RULES
Liberty is not a combination of the two extremes but an atmosphere in its own right. It is the only approach to Christian living Paul commended. Liberty doesn’t view Christianity as a set of rules to be obeyed or as a set of rights to be defended. It sees Christianity as a set of relationships to be valued and cultivated. More than just a religion or a response, Christianity constitutes a vital relationship with God and others. We decide our actions, attitudes, and motives in terms of four God-given relationships that serve as boundaries for our liberty . . . relationship to myself–be fully persuaded in your own mind (Romans 14:1-5) . . . relationship to God–recognize you will give an account of yourself to God (Romans 14:6-12) . . . relationship to other believers (Romans 14:13-21) . . . relationship to unbelievers–do all things for the sake of the gospel (1 Corinthians 10:27-33) . . .
