TOURIST CHRISTIANITY
Daniel Boorstin made an observation about Americans of the ’90s that ought to concern all of us. He said that we are transforming from a nation of travelers into a nation of tourists. It’s a sobering observation — one that ought to send chills down our collective spine. We have become a nation of watchers. Our experiences are no longer our own, they are someone else’s. We go through life in a tourist bus protected from the hazards of the real experiences of life, including our faith experiences. The Church looks more like a Universal Studios Tour where Christians seat themselves in the tram car and watch a group of hired actors and actresses “experience” the Christian life. By Mike Yaconelli, from The Door
