CO-DEPENDENCE IN CHURCHES
Every church has it share of stompers, church hoppers, blackmailers, and pot-stirrers. They get their “feelings” hurt, stop coming, stop contributing and start complaining. Some church people chase them down, pat their hands and soothe their ruffled feathers. In the name of being good Christians we perpetuate co-dependent behavior. Our church is not unusual in that 20% of the membership provide a bulk of the money and do the bulk of the ministry of the church. The 20% are the co-dependent enablers. John C. Brater is a very successful funeral director and is an elder in our church. When unchurched (or inactive church members) people tell John, while making funeral arrangements, to contact the preacher from the church they haven’t attended or supported for twenty years to do the funeral for a family member they want to know how much it will cost. John would like to tell them it will cost around $20,000. For the church to still exist…
