HOLY LAND WORSHIP
One of the greatest instances of Christian unity I’ve ever witnessed was in Israel in 1992. On a tour of the Holy Land, our group was made up of United Methodists, Presbyterians, Disciples of Christ and Roman Catholics. On Russian and Greek Orthodox Christmas Eve, our Epiphany, stopped at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Attached to the church is an ancient monastery. There in the cell occupied by the Roman Catholic priest, Jerome, who translated the Old and New Testaments from the Greek and Hebrew into the Latin Vulgate, making the Bible accessible to the ordinary people, we paused to sing Christmas carols. While we were singing, a group of Korean and German Christians joined us, and in mixed tongues and mixed denominational affiliations, we celebrated the birth of the Savior of us all.
