A LAYPERSON’S INVITATION
A pastor called on a young couple for six years. They were always pleasant and said they planned to attend, but they never did. In the sixth year, a layperson who know the husband invited him to play on the church softball team. The man was an excellent pitcher, and the team started to win games. A few weeks later the family attended the church. Three months later, they joined. Three years later, he was elected to chair the church board. There you have it: a dedicated, faithful, capable, theologically trained, evangelistically oriented pastor visited for six years — nothing. An untrained, friendly layperson who likes softball visits for one week — success! From How to Build a Magnetic Church, by Herb Miller, Abingdon, Nashville, 1987, pg. 32
