COMPLETING EACH OTHER
Back in the late 40’s, just after the close of World War II, Jimmy Durante, the famous comic, got a call from Ed Sullivan, asking Durante to go with him to a veteran’s hospital to entertain the wounded and disabled vets. Durante tried to beg off since he had a couple of radio shows to do. Ed Sullivan promised he could get back in time. Finally Durante agreed but said he would only be able to do one short routine. The two drove out the following Sunday and Durante did his number. The audience was ecstatic and pleaded for more. What happened then surprised even Ed Sullivan who was watching from the wings, well aware that Durante must leave immediately for the city if he was to make his radio date.
