MASS SALVATION SUSPECT
In a warning similar to that of C. S. Lewis concerning the dangers of mass repentance as evoked in his essay, “The Dangers of National Repentance,” John Wesley Lord, the Bishop of the United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. spoke of the artificial increases in church attendance in times of national crisis and upheaval. He was quoted in the February 1, 1993 issue of Time Magazine as follows: “The Church recruited people who had been starched and ironed before they were washed.”
