CONGREGATIONAL UNIQUENESS
People live most of their waking hours under the constant pressure to perform. Their jobs tell them what they must do, the sales quotas they must meet, the work hours they must log, the projects they must complete, the facade they must maintain, the expectations they must fulfill. In theological terms, these folk are living under law with its demands and accusations. Congregations that extend that constant pressure are not unique. Congregations become unique when they embody the gospel and establish people’s worth by faith, not works. Then the congregation becomes a center for mutual forbearance, forgiveness and the healing power of acceptance. Through God’s acceptance of us, the congregation moves forward as a forgiven – not perfect – community. This is the core of the congregation’s uniqueness. From The Christian Ministry, p. 19-21, by F.
