Barbara Hayes in Folk Tales and Fables of the World spins this tale about a tricky rabbit: Once, long ago, there was a very cunning rabbit who enjoyed playing practical jokes on others. One particular day while near the sea, the rabbit heard an elephant just on the other side of the palm trees. Seeing an old rope on the ground, the rabbit had an idea for a joke. He pulled one end of the rope into the trees. When he found the elephant, the rabbit began to insult him. “My, what clumsy, awkward, and ugly feet you have!” said the rabbit. Irritated by such rudeness, the elephant replied, “Why I have a good mind to grab you up and spank you with my trunk.” “And I have a good mind to tie this rope around your trunk and drag you into the sea!” said the rabbit.
