A TEAM OF THREE
New Hope Community Church of Portland, Oregon uses a practical method of developing small groups. They use a team of three individuals to begin a new small group consisting of 1) a leader (LAY PASTOR), 2) an assistant leader (ASSISTANT LAY PASTOR or LAY PASTOR IN TRAINING) and 3) a host. These three team members virtually guarantee the success of a new small group. A team of three provides a strong skeleton which is highly motivated to receive a body. Each team member has a responsibility to assure the success of the group. The leader usually brings the lesson and provides the primary pastoral care to his or her small, but growing flock. The assistant leader is usually in training to eventually take his or her own group. The assistant fills the role of helping with paperwork and assuring that discussion keeps flowing.
