With only one Protestant church in the city of Moscow and a handful of registered churches scattered across the rest of a country so vast that it encompasses eleven time zones, shortwave radio provides the only teaching and worship experience available to most Russian believers. The electric church is the only church most listeners can attend. The situation in Russia matches the picture painted by Martin Marty of listeners substituting “the church in the box” for a fellowship of believers. This situation actually exists in Russia where it is impossible for most Christians to go to a house of worship or to join together in any type of fellowship. If it were not for radio, many of them would have only childhood memories to which they could cling, and others, born under communism, would never have been able to hear the truths of God’s Word and His gracious invitation for all who labor to come to Him.
