STRONG FAMILIES
In the mid 1970’s, Dr. Nick Stinnett, then professor of family studies at Oklahoma State University, became interested in learning more about what makes for strong families. As he studied family conditions in our nations, he was disturbed that much of the research and popular literature about families focused on what was wrong with them. While recognizing the validity of such an emphasis, he, nevertheless, saw a crying need for balance. More information was needed about positive family models and what strong families are like. …he set out to fill the void of information available on family strengths. He began to study strong families in Oklahoma and shortly thereafter expanded his research to the entire nation and beyond. For families to qualify, they had to demonstrate a high degree of marital happiness, a high degree of parent-child satisfaction, and appear to meet each other’s needs to a high degree.Through questionnaires and interviews, many families were investigated.
