A GRIP ON OUR PLAIN DUTIES
There are duties we accepted when we joined the Church, duties of worship, service, loyalty, financial support. How is our grip on these things? We should not fall into the trap, as some do, of saying: “This is such a large Church. My service, my money, will not be missed. There are many other more gifted, wealthier people to carry the burden.” That is a snare and a delusion. It was the sin of the one-talent man in the parable Jesus told. Out of envy, fear or a false sense of inferiority, he buried the talent he had, and became guilty of all the good he did not do! Norman Cousins, in his assessment of Albert Schweitzer, says that part of Schweitzer’s greatness was in his ability to avoid this fallacious thinking.
