GALLUP POLLS ON CONVICTION
“We want the fruits of religion, but not the obligations,” said Gallup. “We revere the Bible, but don’t read it… We believe the Ten Commandments to be valid rules for living, although we can’t name them. We believe in God, but this God is often a totally affirming one… He does not command our total allegiance. We have other gods before him. Only four in 100 Americans claim no religious affiliation or interest in religion,” Gallup said, “but the trends seem to be away from organized religion.” Many Americans are poised to drift into groups, such as the New Age Movement, which make few demands in terms of doctrine and discipline.
