‘TIL DEATH DO US PART
In John Hersey’s novel The Wall there occurs a haunting scene. This is a novel about the Polish Jews and the Nazis. And while it is a novel in form, the episodes are based upon actual events. In this particular episode, John Hersey is telling how the diabolical Nazis shipped Jews from the Warsaw ghetto to concentration camps: A long column of men and women is passing in front of a Nazi officer, seated at a field desk. “If a person looks fit, the officer sends him to another line, for work in a factory. If not, he goes to the death line.” “A man and wife, middle-aged, are in the column. They are quarrelling venomously. Some irritation had become big as all life. Perhaps, they are blaming each other for their plight. If their quarrelling seems out of place, it is also understandable.
