“Pistol Pete” Maravich shares his thoughts concerning his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Ironically, he died shortly after receiving this honor. These memories of Dad’s goals for me were so clear on May 5, 1987, as I sat on a platform in Springfield, Massachusetts, surrounded by the most revered of all basketball achievers. Ironically, I once had told Dad back in my college days that if I ever made the Hall of Fame, I would refuse the award and tell them they had given it to the wrong guy. “Give the award to my dad,” I had told him I’d say, “because there is no way in the world I deserve the honor before he does.” As I look back now I finally feel as though I understand my inheritance.
