JUMPING CONDITIONS
There are times we are called upon to make tough decisions without as much information as we would like. Such was the case with a group of soldiers from Nepal — the Gurkhas — who fought on the side of Malaysia and Britain against Indonesia in 1964. The Gurkhas were not trained as paratroopers, but a particular mission required that they parachute into a remote location in Borneo. The British asked them to volunteer to jump for this mission, but they provisionally declined. Upon further consideration they returned word to the British that they would accept the mission under certain conditions. Their first condition was that the area in which they landed was reasonably soft with no rocky outcrops. Without previous experience in jumping from airplanes, they felt this condition was essential.
