THE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF REST
Years ago, the great violinist Yehudi Menuhin took two years’ leave of absence from the concert stage. He was at the very zenith of his international acclaim. His reason, in his own words, was this: “One of the dangers which beset all artists is staleness. I simply wanted to do the best for myself and for my audience. That is why I retired for two years, to remain for a while alone- – just me and my Stradivarius. Just as a great violinist needed time alone to overcome staleness, Christians need to be alone to be renewed by God.
