A GESTURE OF LOVE
In his book, The Meaning of Persons, Paul Tournier tells how a little thing like bread turned one man’s life around. The man was torn in early youth, by the Second World War, from a life of wealth and ease, and hunted by the Nazis, who had invaded his country, he was destitute and in flight at the time. In the street he saw an itinerant vendor selling bread, but he had no money with which to buy. A wretched beggar came up and bought some bread, and then, turning and seeing this young man standing there, offered it to him instead of eating it himself. That simple, spontaneous gesture overwhelmed the young man. It was a complete revelation to him; it made a different person of him. From Pulpit Resource, Vol. 11, No. 2, p. 4.
