BRIGHTENING THEIR DAY
It happened the day after the 22 cent stamp went into effect. My wife was in a long line at the local Post Office. Everybody wanted 22 cent, D or 2 cent stamps. Unfortunately the Post Office was running out and was only selling a limited supply to each person so as to help as many people as possible. This news invariably produced anger and frustration and the poor postal clerk was taking a verbal and emotional beating. She looked about done in. After listening to the oft-repeated announcement, my wife replied in a very loud voice, “WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU’RE RUNNING OUT OF STAMPS? AFTER ALL, I’VE ONLY KNOWN ABOUT THIS FOR THREE OR FOUR WEEKS. I HAVE PUT IT OFF AND PUT IT OFF AND NOW I COME IN HERE AT THE LAST MINUTE WITH ALL THE REST OF THESE PEOPLE AND YOU TELL ME THAT YOU’RE RUNNING OUT OF STAMPS! WELL, I NEVER!” She gave the postal…
