CONVICTION IS BETTER
On Friday, July 14, 1978, the last day of the trial, the defendant gave his final speech before the court pronounced its sentence: “Five years ago, I requested permission to leave for Israel. Now I am farther from my dream than ever before. One would think that I must regret what has happened, but that is not so. I am happy that I lived honestly, at peace with my soul, never having violated my conscience, even when I was threatened with death. I am happy that I helped people. And I am proud that I knew and worked with such honest, brave, courageous people as Sakharov, Orlov, and Ginzburg, who are accused of carrying on the traditions of the Russian intelligentsia.
