DEATH WAS AVOIDABLE
Finley was employed as a camper salesman and was hauling a camper across the Klamath Mountains on November 14, 1994. On May 22, 1995 a front- loader dug DeWitt Finley’s pickup out of five feet of snow covering a remote mountain road in the Klamath Mountains in Oregon. The pickup had been stuck in snow since November 14, 1994 when Finley had left the main highway to take the backroads through the Siskiyou National Forest to Grant Pass. He never made it. Finley, a former fund-raiser for World Vision in San Diego, California, lived for nine weeks in the cab of his pickup. He waited patiently for rescuers, but his rescuers never came. Finley marked each day off of his calendar and wrote a stack of letters to his boss, his two sons and to his fiancee.
