BLOODY SUNDAY MARTYRESS
Bloody Sunday, a video commentary smuggled out of Lithuania, at great risk, vividly records the events of Sunday, January 13, 1991. On that fateful Sunday, Soviet troops murdered, wounded, and beat the unarmed civilians who surrounded the television and radio tower in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Especially poignant and moving is the death of 24-year-old Miss Asanavichiute. She is one of those run over by the tanks. In the video, the beautiful, young martyr is interviewed on her hospital bed just hours before she dies. Her crushed legs are bare and the tank tread marks and brutal damage they caused are plainly visible. She calmly recounts the terrifying and tragic event that ended her short life. But she still clings to hope; she asks if her legs and hips are so badly crushed that she will not be able to walk or to marry. A short time later she is dead.
