A TEACHER STANDS AND DELIVERS
A recent film, called Stand and Deliver, tells the inspiring true story of a computer technician and teacher by the name of Jaime Escalante, who gave up a booming career to become a high school teacher for Garfield High School located in the barrio of East Los Angeles. Escalante taught students that others didn’t want to bother with. He taught students others had given up on and who had nearly given up on themselves. He took 18 students who were struggling with fractions and long division and took them to honors level in calculus. He challenged them to strive for excellence. And they responded. These chronic underachievers became outstanding students. How? A committed teacher put himself on the line for his students. He helped them believe in themselves and believe in something beyond themselves. He put himself on the line and called out the best that was in them.
