Take Larry Walters for example. In 1982 he took flight in a lawn chair suspended by 42 helium-filled weather balloons. Reaching an altitude of 16,000 feet he began popping the balloons with a pellet gun and descended to the ground safely. (Outside Magazine, October, 1987) Or the Frenchman Jean Luc Antoni who skis down rocks. In 1987 Antoni set a world record of 61 m.p.h. riding a mono-ski down the Col d’Izoard scree slope. Because the scree acts like ball bearings, braking is impossible. To stop, the resourceful Antoni erected a cardboard retaining wall at the bottom of the run and aimed himself towards it.
