HE KNOWS
“Time to come in now!” — the mellow voice of love in the darkening dusk of a distant day, my barefoot, carefree days of firefly lanterns, cricket-chirped curfews, and the serious business of play. No harshness to remember, but firmness born of care, the loving care of mother; she knew how much we liked to play. “Time to come in now!” I seem to hear God say in the deepening dusk of my sunset day. God knows how much I want to stay. I used to speak of making friends with one’s dying hour. Today I will not say this. Death is our enemy, the last enemy to be encountered. It was as the arch- enemy of death that Jesus died so that we might be with him forever. Therefore, it is sentimental and mistaken to speak of making friends with death. God wants us to value the gift of life and seek constant help, lest we fall into attitudes of despair…
