OPEN HOUSE
While going to college, I worked part time as a janitor at an elementary school. During those four years that I worked there, the same teacher would ask me for the same favor on the same day of the year every year. Without failure, on the night of “Open House” every fall, she would ask me if she could store all her ‘junk’ in my janitor’s closet just for that night. She obviously did not want the parents and school officials to see all the things she had not bothered to either file, organize, or throw out for the past 20 years! So every year it was the same routine. On the afternoon of “Open House,” we would carry all of her ‘junk’ to my closet. On the very next day we would carry it all back. Her cleanliness and order were conditioned by those who would inhabit her room for that night. How often do we live by such a code?…
