POWER LIMITS ON PRESIDENT LINCOLN
On March 4, 1861, in his first inaugural address, Abraham Lincoln sought to encourage a skeptical and divided nation concerning the limitations of his power and influence: “While the people retain their virtue, and vigilance, no administration, by any extreme of wickedness or folly, can very seriously injure the government, in the short space of four years.” From Abraham Lincoln’s first inaugural address, 1861
