TREADMILL BLUES
The difference between mission-driven results and goal-driven results is described in the following way: Every day, people with no particularly deep purpose achieve a lot of goals. They complete reports; make sales; ship orders; check off everything on their to-do lists. In the short run, those completions feel good. And they gradually fit together to make a trap. If, over time, the people checking off one goal after another do not see their work contributing to a larger pattern and an overall objective, they can develop the treadmill blues. Work begins to feel endlessly repetitive. There is little sense of mission. From Peak Performers, by Charles Garfield, William Morrow and Company, New York, 1986, pg. 271
