SIGN UP THE HITTER
A scout for the Chicago Cubs phoned from a small town in Nebraska and asked to speak to Charlie Grimm, the Cubs’ manager. When Grimm came on the line, the scout began talking excitedly. “Boss,” he said, “I’ve just seen a pitcher who’s amazing. This afternoon the kid pitched a no- hitter. And not your usual no-hitter – he threw 27 strikeouts in a row. Nobody touched the ball until the last inning when some guy hit a foul. I’ve got the pitcher right here with me. Shall I sign him up?” “No,” Grimm said. “Sign the guy who got the foul. We need hitters.” From Speaker’s Treasury of Sports Anecdotes, Stories and Humor, by Gerald Tomlinson, published by Prentice Hall, 1990, pg. 196
