MARY AS A MODEL OF FAITH
In St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome, Michelangelo’s Pieta is carefully guarded. A few years ago, the sculpture was attacked by a man with a hammer. He damaged the face and arm of Mary. It is a kind of parable of what we have done to her. Protestants neglect her to the point of a masculine religion. Mary’s pilgrimage of faith begins in simple, humble trust, in the grace of God. In her trust, her humility, her receptivity, her openness to the working of God in the world for its salvation, Mary is presented to us as a model of faith.
