PERSONAL INVITATIONS
George Barna has written a provocative book entitled, Marketing the Church. He writes about marketing the church as a very special commodity to a very special market. This may not sound too spiritual, but it is actually a splendid and extremely practical book, filled with insights and advice concerning how to create a vision and develop an integrated marketing and advertising program for the church. Barna highlights a number of marketing methods and formulas, but makes a very basic conclusion: “The most effective means of getting people to experience what a church has to offer is having someone they know who belongs to the church simply invite them to try it. Call it whatever you wish – word-of- mouth, personal invitation, friendship evangelism – this is indisputably the most effective means of increasing the church rolls.” Taken from Marketing the Church, by George Barna, published by NavPress, Colorado Springs, 1988, pg. 109 ($7.99)
