PLANTED SEEDS
In 1949, J. Melvin Ray moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico, to become pastor of the First Baptist Church there. One evening J. Melvin and George Browder, chairman of deacons sat in the old parsonage kitchen and talked about building a new pastor’s home. Browder, a realtor, asked Ray what he wanted in the home. Together they sketched out a floor plan for the house that was to be built. A little over a year later J. Melvin Ray and his family moved into that lovely dark red brick 3,000 square foot home. It had all sorts of amenities that made it an ideal pastor’s home. It had plenty of space for entertaining and a beautiful study. J. Melvin Ray planted eight strong pecan trees in that yard and a lovely rose garden under the living room windows.
