PEOPLE BEGINNING TO TALK
One afternoon when Casey Stengel was managing the Mets, his starting southpaw showed signs of fatigue. As one pitch after another missed the strike zone, the crowd groaned, then hissed, then booed. Finally, when the catcalls became deafening, Casey went out to the mound to replace the left hander. “But Casey,” the hurler pleaded, “I want to pitch myself out of this hole. Why take me out now?” “Well, in case you haven’t noticed,” Stengel said, “people are beginning to talk.”
